I set this up right before this past Chinese New Year. 12" diameter bowl, ~15L water, ADA black soil, no filter, 100w regular household light on top.
The plants are ¬Ã¯] + ºÎ莲 + »Û£ + ¤û§À + Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Tropica'.
The algae covered ¥Û¥J & º¿·ê were from the previous setup.
The animals are: 1 baby snail + 2 ¤pºëÆF. I never fed the fishes - they just eat algae.
I change 1/3 water every 2 days. My problem is that about 10 hours after each water change, there will be a thick layer of bubble on the water. See below:
I notice that the bubbles are from the soil and the plants (which also means my plants are growing well?) There must be a layer of oil on top, such that the bubbles do not burst.
I understand that if the water quallity is not good, then there will be a layer of oil from fish food and waste.
HOWEVER, I have been using this bowl to keep a much larger number of fishes for over 15 months, and I have never see "oil" like this. I never had soil in the bowl before though.
So the presence of large number of plants caused the oil? Why?
The above pictures are white balanced. The following is NOT white balanced and closer to the real colour to human eyes.
I cannot use any filter mainly because there is no power outlet in the toilet.
