I think using leaves and a substrate of fine sand will do best in simulating the environment of black water rivers of Amazon. I saw a lot of photos of black water rivers. All of them have a sandy substrate and lots of leaves.

hello there, I am also living in Canada now, and the water's Ph value is between 6.5 and 6.6 in Vancouver Island.
I don't think the water in your tank can goes up like you said.
I think is the gravel you use is effecting the Ph value of the water, and you can check it first.

by the way, where you live in Canada? Vancouver or Toronto?

Hi Jackson, I live in Vancouver. The water pH is 7.0 to 7.4 at my place. I do think its partly the problem of the gravel, but they are river gravels(5-7mm); there is no sea shell content. It might be some things in there within the gravels that are causing this pH change.

The gravel might be the arch-criminal that effect your wather's Ph value.
Usually, when the tank is set up for a while. The water condition become relatively stable. But, when you do not change regularly,and do not clean the filtration stuff, the water Ph value can easily go down.
When I am too lazy to do those kinds of work above, the water's Ph value in my tank can be 6.0. but it gonna be harmful to my fishes.
The gravel in my tank is the white sand 1-2mm.

I have a kauli loach, 2 sae, lots of guppies, 1 fresh dwarf puffer, 1 shrimp, some neons, trumpet snails and horn snails.

The pH remained 7.4 after the tank has been set up since last summer. I do my water change every week, and I add tropica master grow and another liquid iron fertilizer. I pump CO2 gas at its own fermentation rate (about 4 bubbles per second, stops at night) I decided to let pH be that way, since it will be better for the guppies. I have up to 12 species of plants in my tank. My plants won't grow in their best condition, but they'll live...

I will probably take another try when summer comes, because I will try Cockatoo's method of adding oak leaves.

i don't think you should make your tank's Ph value lower.
because the fishes you keep do not like acid water.

I think most of my fish, except japonica shrimp and the guppies, prefer acidic water though...

i collected both oak tree leaf and maple leaf, then boiled them.
it is mazing that the oak leaves can make my water Ph value go down very fast, but the maple leaves do not work well.
