PSB 係 purple non sulfur bacteria , which is originated from the boundary between salt water and fresh water. It was first founded in underground cave water (high density salt layer in the bottom and fresh water on the top). It has bacteriochlorophyll a or b for photosynthesis but cannot use sulfur as electron donor so it is called non sulfur bacteria.

Yes, you are right, thanks for correcting me. I have checked a text book, PSB 係 purple non sulfur bacteria. These kinds of bugs are under the family Rhodospirillaceae.

But what does this type of bacteria do in fresh water ? How can it improve the water quality and what is the rationale ? Is it decomposing organic waste ?

This kind of bugs uses organic compounds as a source of food and electron.

Does it mean that, it can decompose protein (stool, not eaten food) in the water ? If protein is the cause cloudy water, this PSB will decompose it and therefore water become clear ?

What will the PSB produce after digest the organic compounds ?
