Fish Fan Hing, I do not really understand what do you meant by the above!. I have a 501 as well, as far as I aware, the arrangement of 501 is the water will pass through teh Bio-ring first then the sponge before passing back into the tank.. So,, it should made no different in term of the Bio-rings get clogged up by the waste.. Am I right or I missed something in my 501???

The primary function of bio-rings is to support the growth of water purifying bacteria. It should be the sponge there to absorb the dirt. If you simply remove the sponge and fill up the filter all with bio-rings, they can be easily clogged with the dirt and lost their primary function.
