I had this desert storm problem too but solved it after more than 3 weeks of water-change (2x 90% week 1, 2x 50% week 2-3), regular cleaning of filter sponge, and using a clear-water solution (Nutrafin) to sweep up small particles in the fina lstage.

Most of all, patience is required.

I think it was because the sendiment were stirred up and could not settle down. The suspended particles were too small to be retained by filter sponge so only way out is large water-changes.
