It really depends on what kind of plants you want to keep, and how big you tank is. My first real planted tank is a 36 incher with DIY CO2. I had selected plants that will thrive with amber lighting, but limited CO2 supply. Growth wasn't as spectacular as CO2 injection, but its a big improvement compare to what I had before introducing DIY CO2.

Don't laugh... this is what it looked like back in 2001.

DIY CO2, DIY fertilizer, and gravel

1 X 2016 canister
