Flourite Red developed by Seachem.. Right?
I am using it now.. This kind of substrate is mixture of red, black, white etc color of small rock... size is about 4mm in average and quite amount of red dirt... price is around 20 dollars US.... Personally, I think this substrate is pretty good.. give a nice and warm atmosphere to your aqurium.. and it lowers your water ph (which save you a lot of effort for lower your water ph) most importantly, helps plant to grow pretty well, though i don't have many choice.... pull back > 1. create cloudiness when disturb the substrate 2. one told me the rock size is too big, not good for rooting

by the way... if you wanna buy it... why don't you try mix flourite red with Seachem Onyx... heard it is really good for this combination

Dear BC, Thx for your information. The pricing of it in HK is almost the same. I am still evaluating different types of substrate. Though ADA is the lowest risk choice that doesn't need to be worried, I would like to explore others. Red Sea Flora Base is another choice I am considering, it doesn't need to be rinsed.

Sup Alex!
I heard about ADA for long time, but no one would carries this product becuz of the price and popularity here in US. I really wanna try it. There is one type of substrate made by ADA, I think the name is ADA Amazon, a substrate made to be compared to the living condition of amazon river. That's really cool!

How much is a pack of ADA substrate in HK?

Seachem Flourite 7 Kg. (Red)

Fluorite Red is a specially fracted stable porous clay gravel for the natural planted aquarium. Its appearance is best suited to planted aquaria, but may be used in any aquarium environment. Fluorite Red is most effective when used alone as an integral substrate bed, but it may be mixed with other gravels. Gravel modifiers such as laterite are not necessary. Fluorite Red is not chemically coated or treated and will not alter the pH of the water. Although pre-washed, it should be rinsed before use to remove residual dust. Dust can also be minimized by filling tank slowly and dispersing water so that the Fluorite Red bed is not disturbed. Slight initial cloudiness is normal and will clear rapidly (2-12 hours). This bag is sufficient for about a 5 cm (2 inch) deep bed in a typical 40 l (10 gallon) tank. Recommended use is 1 kg (2 lbs) for approximately each 200 cm2 (31 in2) of tank bottom at a depth of 5 cm (2 in).

I newly set up a 20” about 60L tank with Seachem Flourite in 10 days ago. For BC said the substrate contains difference color “small rocks” should be Flourite instead of Flourite Red. The difference between Flourite & Florite Red is in the contents of minerals which you can find from sachem.com.

I used 2 packs of Flourite and made 2.5” height in the front & almost 3.5” in the back (I lost about 5% Flourtie by mistake when I wash them). I found there are really lot of muddy dirt & spent hours & tons of water to clean it up. After 10 days of the new set up tank, most of the plants are growing well; For example, some “red butterfly” banded & turned green due to suspended in a bucket for 2 days. Since 5 days ago, those green leafs already showed in red. And here are some PH & KH reading

Tape Water PH7.4 KH2-3
Day 1 PH7.2 KH1-2
Day 2 PH7 KH1-2, Added Plants 2 hrs Lighting without CO2
Day 3 PH7 KH1-2, 4 hrs Lighting with CO2
Day 6 PH6.6-6.8 KH2-3, 6 hrs Lighting with CO2, Start Add Fishes
Day 6 – 8 average add 10 fishes per day
Day 9 PH6.6-6.8 KH2-3

Hope it can help.

I used both, Flourite Red is exactly the same as Flourite, which is just as good. But its grain size is a little bit bigger, and each grain is a little rougher than Flourite. Personally, I prefer Flourite, it just looks better.
