Apparently, for heavily planted tank, things can be a little different. For myself, I planted the tank quite heavily at setup,
and add fish after about 5 days, no noticeable ill effect on the fish and no ammonia toxicity observed.

For plantless tank, thing can be very different.

Some types of plants can take NH3/NH4 as the nitrogen source instead of / or in addition to NO3.

I read b4 that most plants generally prefer NH3/NH4 over NO3 bec it take less energy for the plants to assimilate them.

most algae prefer NH3/NH4+ over NO2/NO3.

I don't understand how they describe the testing process.

So do we test the water right after we drop the ammonia?
And then we wait a few days, then test the nitrite concentration? or we add more ammonia again, and test right after?

as most of the website articles are for disuccsion and experiemtns, so hthey keep monitoring the variations of NH3, No2 and NO3.

For using this method in real life, I guess testing after a few days is ok. This testing just to test if NH3 is changed to No3 that prove some nitrifying bacteria is in the filter already.
